This Year's Project: Early Learning and Youth Development Center

About Our Organization

The Y is a diverse, non-profit organization of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Since no two communities are exactly alike, no two Y’s are exactly alike. However, every Y strives to bring people just like you together. Our commitment to community ensures the opportunities for all to learn, grow and thrive.

We nurture life lessons in kids, foster health and well-being among people of any age, bring people together to pursue passions old and new and provide mutual support for everyone in our neighborhoods.

Join us—we could use someone like you.

Current Project: Early Learning and Youth Development Center

It has been an incredible 2023 at the Y. We have an ambitious and transformative plan to increase our impact on the community's children, youth, families, and employers. We are expanding the current facility to achieve our vision, which includes a 12,000-square-foot expansion for an Early Learning and Youth Development Center. The center will have more than 100 additional program openings for children 6-weeks to 16 years of age. Opportunities include early learning, school age and teen programs like after school care, summer day camp, and specialty programs like STEAM and leadership.

Areas incorporated within the expansion are an indoor playground – which includes open space to play and will be accessible to the entire community, four childcare classrooms, early childcare programming, bathrooms, and storage. In addition to the typical daytime childcare program, we will add additional spots for our school-age care, including after-school and summer camp programs. Evening Care will be included in this expansion to help accommodate the 2nd shift workforce.

  • YMCA Child Care Expansion: Phase 1 Support

    Project Details

The Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA announces plans to build an expansion at their South Sioux City location that would include three to four new classrooms for childcare and school age programming, as well as an indoor playground area. The entire process from start to finish could take up to two years, but hinges on community support.

Construction is expected to start after the majority of the fundraising has been completed. The new addition will meet the needs of the communities growing population especially in children under age 18. This expansion will provide full-time and part-time care for children ages 6 weeks through 12 years old along with nontraditional times to include opportunities for care through the evening and early mornings. The opening date is slated for January of 2024.

CEO, Rhonda Robson said, “We are excited about the potential for greater impact as we expand our physical building to offer more childcare programs to our community.” Designed to be a premier licensed childcare site, the Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA will provide Siouxland residents with more opportunities and programming to best suit the growing need of safe atmospheres for kids, families and adults to use throughout the year.

Phase 1 of expansion is underway and includes renovating rooms in the current facility to accommodate the new programming and expansion: updating locker rooms to make them more family oriented, renovating space to start child care in 2022, and expanding outdoor play space.  Later phases of the project include the construction of an 11,000 square foot expansion to the east of the current facility, a capital campaign to raise funds for the facility and an operations campaign to keep fees affordable for the Siouxland Community.

Areas incorporated within the expansion are: Indoor Playground – which includes open space to play and will be accessible to the entire community, three to four childcare classrooms to add 82 spots in our early childcare programing, bathrooms and storage. In addition to the typical day time childcare program, we will add additional spots for our school age care including afterschool and summer camp programs. Evening Care will be included in this expansion to help accommodate the 2nd shift workforce.

A capital campaign is underway for this $4 million project and an operational campaign for an additional $2-3 million dollars. “Think of the difference we can make. With 85% of all brain development occurring in the first five years of a person’s life…think of the impact we could make and opportunity to really affect possitive change. This is litteraly for our future. This will be unique to anything else in Siouxland and we look forward to seeing this expansion serve many families in our community,” Robson said. “…and none of this would be possible without the generous support of donors and partners. We are so appreciative of the commitment to youth development in our community.”

  • LIVESTRONG at the YMCA

    Project Details

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a small-group program developed and established in partnership with the LIVESTRONG Foundation, assists those living with, through, or beyond cancer to strengthen their mind, body, and spirit.

Recent research from the Yale Cancer Center and Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Institute confirmed that LIVESTRONG at the YMCA participants experience improved fitness and quality of life as well as significant decreases in cancer-related fatigue.

The program has served more than 30,000 cancer survivors in more than 400 communities across the nation. It is open to adults 18 years or older.

With your support we would like to offer this program at no cost to any adult cancer survivor, and include a complimentary membership to the Y for the duration of the program.  We currently have a fee to enroll, but with your help we can erase that barrier and serve over 60 cancer survivors through 6 different sessions.

  • Y-CLUB Supplies

    Project Details

The YMCA has been a part of the Siouxland Community since 1884 and we are committed to helping each child learn, grow and thrive! We are cause-driven leaders that provide quality care focusing on the following areas: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Our desire is to treat each child as an individual as we seek to implement our four core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect & Responsibility into everything we do for before & after-school programming.

We not only provide affordable, quality care, but also bring Dakota Valley parents the opportunity to choose a before & after school program that involves their children in recreational sports, swim lessons, dance & theatre classes, volunteerism through social responsibility, & so much more!

The Y-CLUB is the newest addition to our programming and we are in need of supplies for the school year.

  • Wellness Area Equipment

    Project Details

There are lots of ways you can help create a better Siouxland. But there is no gift more precious than health.

With a donation to the Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA, you give better health to kids, families and seniors by supporting programming that has just one goal – improving the overall wellbeing of Siouxland. We strive to provide the best experience for those of all ages whether it is through group fitness classes, personal training, youth sports, or even birthday parties - we are here for you!

We are celebrating our 10 year anniversary and with 10 years comes a need for changes - updating the facility, repairing and maintaining the building, and making sure our equipment is fully functioning for the use of our members. Our goal is to raise funds to help cover the expenses to update our cardio equipment, free weights area, and our weights machines and better serve the Siouxland community.

All we do is only possible through the support of people like you. Be part of it!
