This Year's Project: Child Care Solutions

About Our Organization

MISSION: To improve lives by uniting the caring power of our community. United Way works together with businesses, individual community members, nonprofits, schools, faith groups, government & the media, because it takes the whole community to get the kind of results we need. We believe in advancing the common good by fighting for the Health, Education, and Financial Stability of every person in Siouxland.

Current Project: Child Care Solutions

From 2015 to 2020, Woodbury County lost 33% of child care programs, according to Iowa Child Care Resource and Referral. During that same time frame, the percentage of families with parents working and children under the age of 6 has increased by 3%.

The shortage of quality child and infant care is a challenge facing families, the workforce and utlimately the success of Siouxland children. United Way of Siouxland is working with the community to find solutions to the child care shortage. Solutions could include:

-Increasing safe, quality child care slots
- Increasing safe, quality infant care slots
- Maintaining and increasing child care entreprenuers
- Innovatively addressing child care for 2nd and 3rd shift workers
- Creating business and child care partnerships

  • Imagination Library

    Project Details

As simple as it sounds, reading regularly with children during their preschool years gives them the biggest boost toward a successful education they will ever get. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library will help parents read with their child. This United Way of Siouxland funded initiative works to make sure children in Siouxland have books of their own. Each month a new, carefully selected book will be mailed in your child's name directly to your home. He/she can look forward to new and exciting reading adventures until he/she turns five years old as long as you remain a resident of Siouxland.

    • More than 95% of a child's brain is formed in the first 6 years of life
    • Only 50% of parents read to their children in infancy
    • The average parent given books to read to their child is 4 times more likely to do so

Any child between the ages of 0 to 5 years old can be signed up by a parent or guardian. This child will receive age appropriate books in his or her name once a month. The cost to run the program is roughly $30 a year per child or $150 for all 5 years a child is in the program. Our goal of $3,000 will allow 100 Siouxland kids to receive books at home.
